Ezra Haugabrooks is an American-born conductor and composer of African-American and Jamaican descent. He began playing piano at the age of three and performing piano accompaniment with his father, Charles Haugabrooks, at the age of 7.
During his 5th grade year, Ezra attended the Bach Festival in Orlando Florida with his mother. While in attendance he witnessed children playing stringed instruments. Intrigued and inspired, he begged his mother for a violin and lessons. Ezra graduated with a viola performance degree from Andrews University in 2008. As part of his graduate work, he studied with Igor Fedotov and Nokothula Ngweyema, among other notable instructors. His first time conducting was in graduate school. He organized, fundraised, and was collaborative pianist in a production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflote. Since then, Ezra has developed a deeper respect for singers and working in opera, musicals, and zarzuela. Ezra has performed with members of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra in a private chamber series in Minnesota, as well as in numerous private chamber recitals in Northwest Chicago in a variety of roles as a violist, counter-tenor, tenor, conductor, and pianist.
In 2017, Ezra founded the Ballet and Dance Orchestra. With the intent to perform music for companies, his vision was to offer an alternative for organizations to be able to use live performances of both original and well-beloved orchestral selections, respecting and recognizing the musicianship of local professional artists while still making it accessible to the public. The Ballet and Dance Orchestra, Inc. seeks to be the first of its kind to pursue this vision and perform for major shows!
This fall, the Peter London Dance Company will collaborate with Ezra Haugabrooks and the Ballet and Dance Orchestra on an exciting new work called “Black Men Crossing”. Ezra will compose and conduct the score at the Adrienne Arshdt Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.
Outside of the world of music, Ezra is a single father to his beautiful son, Noah Haugabrooks. He enjoys spending free time discovering springs and exploring nature with his son.
